Inferior Vena Cava Filter Placement

The Inferior Vena Cava Filter Placement procedure is used to insert an IVC filter into a large blood vessel in the stomach. This filter helps blood return to the heart from the lower parts of the body, and it can also keep blood clots from travelling to the heart. The IVC filter is implanted via a catheter in the neck or groin, which is then guided to the appropriate blood vessel. The catheter is removed, and the filter attaches itself to the vein.

This procedure may be necessary for patients who are at risk of developing blood clots or patients who have a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE). While blood thinning medication may also be prescribed, an IVC filter may be implemented for more serious cases.
