Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Treatment

Similar to Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is diagnosed by a build up of plaque or a blockage in arteries other than the ones surrounding the heart muscle. Some symptoms include:

  • Cramping or aching in the arms or legs with activity
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness in legs (feeling of legs “giving out”)
  • Non-healing ulcers
  • Gangrene

Our treatment for this condition involves a variety of options, which is based on each patient’s specific needs. Some treatment options include procedures such as percutaneous transluminal atherectomy (PTA), stent implants, or even bypass surgery. PAD blockages often occur in the legs, kidneys, neck, or arms. Some factors that may lead to a development of this condition are: family history, smoking habits, age, diet, and exercise frequency. Because of the risk factors, patients who develop PAD may also have other conditions such as diabetes, kidney disorders, or blockages in arteries that lead to the heart or brain.
